Meet the team

A dedicated and experienced team of trustees deliver the vision and leadership necessary to steer the W W Winter Heritage Trust safely through its third century.

Members and volunteers from diverse backgrounds and skillsets contribute more than £20,000 of ‘in kind’ benefit each year to the project through cataloguing, research and digitisation of Winter’s immense photographic archive.

Meet the team below.

Trustees

Diane BowlerDiane worked in the Accounting and Finance sector since 1981, becoming a FCCA (Fellow Certified Chartered Accountant) in 1995.She has experience in auditing, fraud investigations, preparing consolidated group Financial Statements and reporting to the UK stock exchange.  Diane also served as the Finance Director for a subsidiary of a prominent US corporation. Prior to her early retirement Diane became a Principal lecturer in accounting and Finance, for 23 years.She now indulges in her hobbies of needlecraft, history, reading, theatre and socialising with friends.
Dr Mark HallMark is an award-winning commercial advertising photographer. He’s travelled extensively and had commissions by many top advertising agencies, design groups and editorial clients across the world.  He began teaching in 2000 and in 2018 successfully finished his PhD.  He is currently a Fellow of The Royal Society of the Arts, The Royal Photographic Society and a Fellow of the British Institute of Photography. 
Peter Jordan-TurnerPeter is a University lecturer in Photography, with strong family roots in Derbyshire. He is completing a PhD at the University of Derby, researching the social value of photographic archives. He supports the development of ties with Higher Education collaborators, with a focus on education, heritage engagement, research, and sustaining community access to visual history.
Jane Middleton-SmithJane’s varied career in heritage includes working in museums, on gallery design teams, arts projects and education. She has organised conferences, citizen research projects and volunteer teams. She has worked as a freelance researcher, writer and lecturer. Jane is currently archivist to John Smedley and a curatorial adviser to Winter’s.
Simon VaughanSimon comes from a library management background. He obtained his degree at the University of Derby, then taught for two years at De Montfort University.  Since 1992 he has been Archivist of the Alexandra Palace Television Society. Simon became involved with Winter’s in 2021 by cleaning glass plate negatives.  His role has increased by taking on the role of all things heritage and Volunteer co-ordinator.
Jonathan WallisJonathan is a museum professional with over 30 years’ experience of working in a variety of museums. He left his position as Head of Museums at Derby Museums in 2018 to become a regional Cultural Heritage Curator for the National Trust in North Yorkshire, Teesside and County Durham. He has a particular interest in photographic history.
Michael YoungAfter a 25-year career in engineering, Mick Young worked as a management consultant and director of a property company.  He is a trustee of two other charities one of which, the 78 Derngate, Northampton Trust, he has chaired for 10 years.  He is also a former council leader with interests in education and the arts.
